Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel

The views and the surrounding area were breathtaking, and this became the most special part of our whole Japan trip. The hotel staff made the stay memorable, especially Saieko, who was so kind and helpful. After we explained that we needed vegetarian food, they took care of all our needs and the meal was amazing. I hope everyone at the hotel liked our gift, it was a small way to show our gratitude.

The beds looked basic at first, but I slept incredibly well. We also had one of the best meals of our Japan trip: there was plenty of food, and it was prepared and presented beautifully. The stay felt personal and had the calm, zen atmosphere we wanted from a Ryokan. Thanks to Hitomi and Team. I’d recommend it if you’re visiting Japan and want an authentic experience away from the usual path.

We were only passing through on a day hike from Arashiyama to Takao, but the staff and owner welcomed us on short notice even though we weren’t hotel guests. The sukiyaki dinner by the water was one of the most picturesque meals of our Japan trip. They kept checking in and made sure our food arrived before the last bus home. Near the end, we even saw some fireflies. The owner and driver insisted on giving us a free shuttle to the nearest city bus stop, where we were staying. Their kindness and service made our Takao trip truly special.

The 600+ steps behind the hotel lead up to Jingo-ji temple, one of my favorite temples. We stayed on a Friday, when there was almost nobody else around, so the views and scenery were amazing. I’d happily stay here again. I came looking for a traditional stay in the Kyoto mountains, and the area was absolutely beautiful. The hotel staff were kind and respectful, and the meals offered there were superb.
