The Pocket Hotel Kyoto-karasumagojo

The safety issue bothered me most: all the stair exits were locked. For over $100 a night, the room was barely big enough for one person and a small suitcase, and it had no trash can, private bathroom, or shower. Guests have to take their own rubbish and leave used towels, bedding, and pajamas in boxes by the elevator. The polyester pajamas felt cheap compared with the cotton ones at other Japanese hotels. The luggage storage system was confusing, and staff didn’t explain how it worked. Hard to see how this earns three stars, and it wasn’t worth the price.

The building felt like it was swaying or shaking to me, though I don’t know why. The location is about a 30-minute walk from tourist spots, or you can take the MRT from right in front of the hotel. Rooms are small but clean and fair for the price. Pajamas are free to pick up in the lobby, where there’s also a microwave and kettle. This is room-only accommodation, with bathrooms and toilets outside the rooms, so it won’t suit you if you want a private bathroom. The separate male and female bathrooms are on the second floor, very clean and tidy, with enough stalls that you don’t have to queue. They have makeup tables, free toothbrushes, and hair dryers. There’s a toilet on every floor.

It’s right beside a train station, though most tourist attractions are a long way off. The rooms felt too small for me, but my son stayed and seemed fine. I wouldn’t return. I’d suggest it for people on a tight budget who can handle cramped spaces and shared bathrooms.

Very clean, and the staff are really friendly. If you know what to expect and don’t bring lots of luggage or plan to hang around in your room, the location and facilities work well.
