Guest House Saika-an

I spent a week at Gurst Hotel Saikaan Aoi while traveling solo, and felt safe and comfortable there. The owner and especially the staff were so welcoming and helpful, including with suggestions for places to eat. There’s a grocery store and laundromat within walking distance, and the hotel was a handy base for walking to the sights I wanted to see. It was a warm, relaxing stay in Maizaru, and I’m glad I got to see this part of Japan. Thanks for the kind reception. I’d recommend it to other solo travelers.

The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the location in central Nishi Maizuru made it easy to get around. They had local bikes to borrow, plus bags, towels, and other things to use at the Japanese bath up the street. A wonderful place to try a Japanese-style hotel.

I checked in at Saikaan Aoi late in the evening and had to leave early, so my stay felt rushed. I’m from Higashi-Maizuru and wanted a chance to enjoy Nishi-Maizuru, after spending time at my parents’ house. I stayed in Space 1. It had the feel of old-fashioned living but was clean and comfortable, with a view of a small courtyard or terrace from the window. A quiet, relaxing place, with clean toilets and showers and plenty of power outlets. There are some tasty, reasonably priced restaurants nearby. I’d like to return for a few days to explore the town and its shops at a slower pace. I missed out on Cinema Cafe Seis and Manai's famous water source this time, but those are on my list. One thing to keep in mind, many Maizuru restaurants are closed on Tuesdays.

The rooms were roomy and comfortable, and I was really happy with my stay. You can borrow a bicycle and ride out to Yoshiwara, which I did for cherry blossom viewing. I wish I’d come when the flowers were at their peak for a little longer, but I’ll definitely visit again. The inn is a pleasant walk from central Nishi-Maizuru, with town views along the way from the station. There’s a shopping street close by for food, plus seafood breakfast on the first floor and lots of lunch choices. It’s also nice to have two public baths nearby.
