Yuushien-Garden on an island in lake Nakaumi is worth a visit if you're there in May or June. The house itself is in a quiet neighborhood, though the nearby school gets noisy during the day. The owner is outgoing and happy to help arrange trips or give you a lift to the station, and he'll chat in English or Japanese. The Japanese-style rooms are nicely put together, the beds are comfortable, and the shared shower and bathtub feel luxurious. The station is a bit far, but there's a bus, or you can walk about 20 minutes along the canal.

Mr. Namba is an open, friendly host who speaks English very well. He gave us useful tips for things to do around town, including how long it takes to get there and what they cost. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the guest house is conveniently close to everything while still being quiet. Highly recommended!
