Guesthouse Tomoshibi - Hostel

The walls were so thin we could hear everything, and other guests woke us up several times. The place had a strange, almost pioneer-camp feel. It was very cold, especially at night, and the only heat came from a petroleum heater that smelled really bad. For what we paid, it felt like too much, and I wouldn’t come back. I’d rather stay somewhere quieter and farther away. The main thing you’re paying for here is the location.

The place smelled of kerosene the whole time. The onsen was far too hot to use, certainly well over 50°C.

I stayed in the Rider House part of the guesthouse and found it basic but comfortable. The owner was super friendly and helpful, and the location was great, really close to the bus to kamacochi. The onsen was basic, but it had real hot spring water and was properly hot. I wish I could have stayed another night, but I was trying to outrun the rain on my motorcycle 😸. My one regret is not ordering the food, it looked REALLY good!

Nice place, with a very kind woman running it and good dinner. There’s a siren that goes off whenever someone enters the guesthouse or store, so it’ll wake you up each time. The room was quite dusty and kept making me sneeze. **Don’t book through a third-party website.** If you call the place or reserve through its website, it’ll cost less than half as much, 5,000-5,500yen.
