Dinner was delicious and plentiful. We were even served what looked like A5 Waygu beef, which we cooked ourselves. The long tunnel to the dining room wasn’t ideal, but no big deal. My room was large and well appointed, and the staff were courteous and kind. The onsen was nice, though it could use a refresh, and some of the water taps weren’t working quite right. The changing area was spacious and well appointed, and sitting outside in the hot water was wonderful. After dinner on the last night of the light show, I left my group and took the bus to Matsumoto castle, then walked back. It was an interesting walk and felt absolutely safe.

The meals were a highlight, with each dish made from locally sourced ingredients and tasting fresh and authentic. Every staff member went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. Ryokan Sugimoto brings together warm hospitality, superb cuisine, and traditional charm. We highly recommend it for anyone looking for a genuine Japanese ryokan experience.

Snow fell the next morning, wrapping everything in quiet. I’d had this ryokan on my bucket list for a long time. The room was really comfortable, and the food was decent, especially the soba. I ordered a bottle of wine for myself and they served me an extra dish. The one downside was how cold the private bathtub room was, so I couldn’t use it and used the private bath instead.

Their website says you can book a private onsen by the hour, depending on availability. When we arrived, they told us that option wasn’t available and gave no explanation. We were very disappointed. I hope they change the site so it doesn’t mislead more people.

The room and food were excellent. The highlight was the hot tub with natural volcanic hot water. You can have a private tub or share the general hot tub with other guests.
