Super Hotel Matsumoto Oshiroguchi

Our room was quite spacious, and it was useful to have a humidifier. The tap water is drinkable. I appreciated being able to get an extra pillow for free, though the standard one was too hard for me. The front desk staff were attentive and kind, and as a foreigner I had no trouble communicating in English. Free breakfast and the welcome drink bar were excellent. The parking building is right next to the hotel, but getting in may be difficult for wheelchair users. I would have preferred separate men's and women's hot spring baths instead of bathing hours scheduled by gender.

Breakfast was included and had a nice mix of Japanese and Western food. Women could also choose from a big selection of free toiletries, which was another plus. The room was the smallest we had during our two weeks in Japan, the beds were the least comfortable, and the bunk above us squeaked so much that sleeping at night was difficult. The public onsen wasn't as good as at other hotels either.

Our room was small, as you might expect in Japan, but it had everything we needed. The hotel was clean and welcoming, the breakfast was very good, and the evening included free alcoholic and soft drinks. The spa and Onsen were great, with a mineral bath; women could also use free products at night. Staff were very helpful, especially Akeda at reception, and the price was great. Matsumoto Castle is worth seeing, and Kamikochi was the highlight of our trip to Japan. It was easy to reach from Matsumoto. This is a place I'd highly recommend to travelers looking for an authentic Japanese experience.

I had stayed at Super Hotels before and was looking forward to this one, but it was a real letdown. The bed was just a mattress on the floor, without a frame, parking cost 1100 yen even though it was free at other Super Hotels, and breakfast was terrible. Apart from the older woman at reception, the staff didn't seem happy. I wish I'd booked the dormy inn instead. We stayed there in toyama and it was great.
