Tobira Onsen Myojinkan

The standing onsen was superb, and the property has lovely interiors. I’d pick a top-floor room for the mountain views; the room was very well designed. The Japanese food was good, with some especially nice broths, though not spectacular overall. Breakfast was simple, and I didn’t try the French restaurant. Staff were professional, but didn’t feel as warm as those at smaller family-run onsens. There’s a pleasant short walk to a small dam, and not much else to do on site, which suits a ryokan. It’s a Relais & Chateau property.

We spent two wonderful days here for our honeymoon, and the staff made the stay feel special. The service was incredible, and the hotel had lots of onsens that added so much to the experience. It became our favorite hotel in Japan, exceeded our expectations, and we’re very grateful. We’d definitely come back and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

The public baths were spectacular, especially the outdoor one overlooking the river. This stylish onsen sits beside a small river in the mountains, and the service was excellent. Our room was comfortable, but some areas needed maintenance and the shower had a strong damp smell. We ate at the Japanese restaurant; it was good, though not as good as at other onsens we’ve visited. A regular guest said the French restaurant was spectacular and that we should have tried it.

The staff, food, and room were all superb. This is one of my favorite ryokans, and I highly recommend it.
