Dogo Onsen is a must-do, and tattoos are accepted. There are two price options: one gives access to the public bath, while the other includes the public bath, premium public bath, and tea room with tea and a snack. We chose the second, which was nice for taking our time and talking with family. During tea, the staff member also explained lots of things to do in the city. We took the short visit to the historic rooms and baths where the emperor and his family used to come. It’s free and takes 5-10 minutes. I highly recommend option 2.

For 2500 yen, we got 90 minutes, a private room, tea, and sweets. It was a great bath experience, and the place feels very historic. I was told the movie "spirited away' was based on this bath house.

The building is phenomenal, full of history and atmosphere, and as a sightseeing experience it’s excellent. But as an onsen experience, it was only so-so. The bathing area was crowded and didn’t feel very comfortable compared with other onsens in Japan.

It’s beautiful to look at from outside, and the service was excellent. They guided me well, even though they struggled a bit with English for a tourist like me. I loved the tea and snack they provided, but the onsen itself was lacklustre and small next to that dazzling exterior.

An hour’s soak for 700¥ is amazing value. It’s really clean, tattoo friendly, and the free amenities are good quality. The staff are very helpful.
