Super Hotel Matsuyama

The free breakfast was available, but I skipped it because the downstairs area looked small and was packed with businessmen. Parking on site wasn’t free, and none of the staff spoke English. We managed basic interactions in a friendly way, but I missed out on some amenities. For a city this large, I expected a higher standard. This was the most underwhelming stay of my ten-day road trip, and I’d choose another hotel if I return to Matsuyama. The building is clearly older, and neither the rooms nor hallways seemed to have been updated. Both my room and the hallway smelled musty. There was some kind of ionizer plugged in, making such loud zapping sounds that I had to unplug it. Wi-Fi worked, though it was slow. Otherwise things were standard. The rooms aren’t very soundproof either: I heard my neighbor snoring clearly several times and had to use my own earplugs.

The rooms are small, but efficiently laid out and designed. The healthy breakfast buffet and the evening dining area with complimentary drinks, including sake, were nice additions. From check-in through the amenities, the chain offers excellent service. Pricing for all of this is about the same as most Ryokan, so it’s very competitive.

The location is okay, near convenience stores and the tram, though the streets are very dark at night and have no street lamps. Reception staff were very genki and helpful. But the cleaning person opened my door without saying anything or checking whether I was there or awake. Thank God I had the latch locked, because I was getting dressed. It’s okay, but I can see why it’s a one-star restaurant.

I had a wonderful stay in a gorgeous, traditional Japanese room. It was spotlessly clean and incredibly comfortable. Highly recommended!
