Yamatoya Besso

For a traditional Ryokan stay, Yamatoya Besso is the place. It’s close to Dogo Onsen and the shopping street, so the location is hard to beat. The staff made us feel welcome and were glad to answer questions or offer recommendations. As first-time onsen visitors, we really enjoyed the hotel’s private onsen. The free beer afterward was a lovely extra. Highly recommend!

The generous meals were almost too much for me. Everything was carefully made and beautifully presented, but I was full by the third course. Come hungry! We spent two peaceful nights at Yamatoya Besso, just above Dogo Onsen. It felt secluded while still being central. Our room’s private bath was perfect after long walks around town, and the public bath was calm, well maintained and designed to fit the traditional feel of the ryokan. Guests can also use the bathhouse at historic Yamatoya Honten for free. They had free-flow Ehime mikan juice, local sake and snacks, a thoughtful addition. The staff were warm, attentive and professional throughout. For a quiet escape with refined service and local hospitality, this is a great choice.

I was thoroughly pleased with my stay. The relaxing onsen in my room, the head chef’s beautifully prepared food, and the attentive service from the staff all made a strong impression. Thank you for making my trip such a satisfying experience.

We felt very well looked after and would love to return someday. The staff were welcoming and personally showed us to our rooms, explaining the facilities and extras. We could borrow yukata to wear outside, and there was access to a nearby sister onsen. Geta were provided for the walk, along with a towel basket if we went to Dogo Onsen. The inn looks over famous Dogo Onsen and has a central but private feel. We drove, and found a few parking spaces by the quiet entrance. Our party enjoyed the tatami rooms, art, regional orange juice or tea, and yokan as a generous summer welcome. The public onsen was quiet, with indoor and outdoor options. Beer on tap and ice pops outside the bath felt like a treat. We chose breakfast only, and as a group of six ate our multi-course meal in a beautifully lit private room rather than having it brought to our rooms.
