They provided free transport from the station, and the food, service, and calm atmosphere were all excellent. The staff took care of my wife’s allergy and remembered it for later meals without us having to remind them.

The warm, friendly staff made this small place feel much more personal than the polite service you usually find around Japan. It was snowing heavily when we arrived, and the scenery was amazing. Every room faces the little river. Ours was small and cozy but had plenty of space for the two of us, and there was a kotatsu. When you arrive, you can choose your pillow. The baths include a windowless indoor family bath, a larger bath for men and women, and an outdoor bath that’s women-only in the morning, unisex during the day, and reserved on a first-come basis at night. We were served meals in our room, and everything was delicious and plentiful. We were stuffed after every meal. I’d come back for the cozy atmosphere and would recommend this place.

At USD 500, I think two stars is fair. The room was large, with a view like a painting; the massage chair was good, the futon very comfortable, and the toilet had hot air. I’d give those room features 5 stars. The mixed outdoor bath was nice and the indoor onsen average, so 4 stars there. One staff member spoke English and was very helpful, also 4 stars. The food gets 2: the ingredients were fine and the rice very good, but the cooking wasn’t high quality. The ryokan seems to favor serving a lot over hiring a competent chef. For example, the grilled fish had been kept warm until its skin turned stretchy and matte, and the texture was rubbery. The internet was supposed to work in the room, but it didn’t, so that’s 1 star. In response to the owner, I love Japanese food and have stayed at Chojukan Hoshi four times. I’m sorry my review upset you.

We’re so happy here. The family greeted us warmly at this authentic Japanese inn, and it feels absolutely lovely. There are private onsens and large guest rooms looking out on snow-covered trees and mountains. Cleanliness is my biggest pet peeve, and this place is five-star clean, squeaky clean. Loving it!
