Aso Farm Land

The visit left me really sad. The animals were in very small enclosures, mostly bare concrete, and it was especially hard to see that with monkeys, since they’re so intelligent. Owls were chained to a branch in a small room, a turtle was lying in a two-square-meter sandbox, and goats were kept on ten square meters of concrete. I had expected more humane care because the zoo is in the countryside and seemed small, which is why I went. I left with a broken heart.

The onsen was good and the stay itself decent, though it felt overpriced. The dinner buffet was included in our booking, but nearby restaurants had all closed by 5 pm, so I had no choice but to eat there. Nothing was served hot, except the soup, and the food was horrible. Activities also cost extra, and not cheaply. Other resorts sometimes include some activities or at least give hotel guests discounts, so I came away disappointed.

There’s lots for kids of any age here, from the petting zoo to the indoor and outdoor play areas. The challenges are varied and exciting, but still feel safe. Families can find good food and drinks too. I’d happily recommend a visit, though I can’t comment on the rooms.

The petting zoo was nice, but the play area felt pricey for what you get and could use a better clean. The restaurants were also so expensive, given the apparent quality, that we didn’t consider eating there.
