As of February 2026, you can get a fresh, tasty live fish lunch for just 2,000 yen and still get change. Everything I’ve tried has been delicious, and the dishes are made with real care. The fish is cut thick, and this season I’d especially recommend the Spanish mackerel bowl. There’s a sign saying “Drop-ins welcome for lunch!!,” but the front desk is usually empty, so on a first visit it can be hard to tell whether they’re open (lol). Press the button on the counter, as I always do, and an older woman will eventually come out. If you’re on your own, she may look puzzled at first (lol), but she’s kind and easy to talk to. 👵💕 They apparently have less fish on days without a catch. When I went on a Thursday, they said, “Sorry, we can make you a tuna bowl, but...” Friday through Monday seems to be the better time to go for lunch.

I came back for a second visit. The Yamaya set meal is 2,000 yen and comes with fried fish, chawanmushi, simmered sea bream with thickened sauce, fried shrimp, and sashimi of sea bream and flounder. The portions are generous, and it’s seriously delicious. You can settle in and eat in the tatami room upstairs on the second floor too. A real hidden gem. I’m planning to return soon.

They were kind about serving me even though I was eating alone at weekday lunch, and had set up a dining table in a corner of the front area. I ordered the Yamaya set meal, which came out surprisingly fast. The chawanmushi arrived a little later, hot and freshly made. The sashimi was thickly cut and plump, and the fried items were freshly cooked. Great value, and I’m glad I came. (*^^*)

The food keeps me coming back for lunch at the end of every year, even though I almost want to keep this place to myself (lol). The set meals are filling and great value. The sashimi tastes so fresh that after eating it here, you won’t want to go elsewhere. The simmered fish is delicious too, so you really can’t go wrong. Eating in a ryokan-style private room is a big plus. It’s normally something you’d pay extra for, but here it’s free, and you can properly relax after your meal. The exterior is a bit off, but the food and the chance to dine in your room won me over. I don’t want it to get too popular, but I’ll keep spending here so they can stay open forever (lol).

The Yamaya set meal was wonderful. The sashimi was plump, and I liked the gently seasoned simmered fish, carefully cooked daikon, and chawanmushi. Even the mozuku and wakame in the miso soup tasted great. You eat in a private room that feels like staying overnight, so I’d recommend it for families with kids.♡
