Minsyuku Maruyo

The island specialties were a great addition to the fugu course: salted octopus, whole boiled octopus, plus spiny lobster sashimi. The fugu dishes included tessa, tecchiri, fried fugu, grilled fugu milt, and sushi. Everything, right through to the rice porridge after the hot pot, was satisfying. The tessa and grilled milt stood out for their freshness and strong, simple flavor. A really satisfying seafood meal.

The staff were friendly at times, but the meal was disappointing. I came for fresh fish, yet when I entered, sushi and tetsuna were already laid out in a room with the air conditioner blasting to heat it. The sushi had visibly dried out, and I couldn't bring myself to eat it. I had ordered a course with spiny lobster, octopus, and pufferfish.

We had a quiet private room for a luxurious lunch, and even the bathrooms were clean. The food was so good that I got caught up eating and forgot to photograph it all. Along with what was in the photo, there was boiled octopus, fugu sushi, chawanmushi, and zosui. They apparently hadn't caught snow crab that day, so they served spiny lobster tartare instead. A pity about the crab, but the meal was still delicious and left me very satisfied.

I went for fugu lunch last week, my second visit. Years ago I stayed here with my children during the summer. I arrived 10 minutes early, and they greeted me warmly. The fugu was incredibly fresh and delicious, and the staff who served it were all friendly and made a great impression. This feels like a guesthouse I'd want to come back to regularly.
