The whole island is worth a visit. It's a lovely place to relax and enjoy yourself, and this is a wonderful traditional Japanese hotel. The food and service are both great.

Takumi Kanko Hotel on Himakajima is a traditional inn with a retro Showa-era feel. Some people may find its facilities a little dated, but it is maintained well and offers a chance to unwind and enjoy island life. Guests praise the warm, friendly service from the proprietress and staff, and there is also an island shuttle. Its hilltop position gives rooms and the observation bath broad views of Mikawa Bay. The food is the most highly rated feature in booking-site reviews and traveler feedback: fresh seafood at dinner, including whole boiled octopus, octopus shabu-shabu, and a generous sashimi platter. In winter, it is also one of the few inns on the island where you can get grilled pufferfish milt.

The room was a standard Japanese-style one, and the bed was nice. I went to Himakajima because I wanted to see the island. I'd hoped to eat pufferfish, but it was out of season, so I couldn't. The boiled octopus and octopus rice were both great, and the boat's luxurious sashimi platter was impressive and tasty. The tiger prawns are peeled alive, which I can't handle, so I left them uneaten. The bus took ages on the way back, and we waited around two hours. I felt sorry for the people behind us.

We stayed two nights with our three elementary school-aged children. They arranged rides to and from the port around our ferry times, and also offer transport to the beach. The food was fresh and delicious, with lots of octopus dishes to enjoy. Himakajima itself was comfortable, but the building was old and run-down. Red mold covered the bathroom in our room, the shower pressure was weak, and the public bath was dark and hadn't been cleaned properly. There was also a noticeable smell from the toilet in our room.

The food was tasty, but I liked my previous stay better, so I'll choose somewhere else next time I'm on Himakajima. I used to be able to smoke and eat in my room. Now smoking in the room isn't allowed, and although I saw online that in-room dining or a private room was available, we ended up eating in the restaurant.
