We only came to use the onsen, we weren't staying at the inn. It was our first time at a Japanese onsen, and there was no one at reception or any signs in English to explain how things worked. Not knowing the customs, we thought it was okay to go into the bathing area. We wore swimsuits, but most of the pools were far too hot even to dip a foot into. There was one pool on the women's side that seemed manageable. We had our children with us and nobody else was around, so we thought we could use it. Then an angry woman came in suddenly. She spoke no English, we don't speak Japanese, and she didn't want to hear us explain. She left, and about two minutes later three police officers arrived. They demanded our passports, which we'd left at our rental house in another city. The angry owner then asked us to pay 2,000 yen for our three-minute bath. We apologized, but got no smile or kind word, not even to our two little boys, who were frightened by the way the police acted. They made us drive home with them following us, then checked our passports. Our day at the seaside was completely ruined by this unsympathetic onsen owner. I wouldn't recommend her establishment to anyone, and would tell people to stay away from this strange seaside town.

It felt clean and family-like, and the owners were really nice with good service. They let us shower after checkout and leave the car parked while we went to the beach.

The proprietress was very kind, and all the staff were friendly. Our room was clean, and we were glad to have three bathrooms to use, including one with an open-air bath. We came because we'd heard the food was delicious, and it was even better than the stories suggested. The portions were so generous we wondered if we'd manage to finish everything. Breakfast had plenty of variety and tasted great too. We were very satisfied, and will definitely stay again.

The hot spring comes straight from the source, and though it was a little hot, adding cold water made it enjoyable. The food was outstanding too, every dish looked amazing and tasted great. I'll definitely come back!

The rooms don't have an ocean view, but the location is hard to beat: Yumigahama Beach is a minute away on foot, and Aogahama Beach takes about ten minutes to walk to. The landlady is friendly and thoughtful, and her care shows throughout the place. The small inn has the feel of a renovated guesthouse, with a very clean interior. There are three small hot spring baths that can be booked for private use, and sleepwear and amenities are supplied. Outside, there's a shower room, washer and dryer, and laundry space. Parking is limited, though depending on the situation you may be able to leave your car there before or after checkout, which is handy for a beach visit. I only stayed overnight this time, but I'd like to try the well-regarded food on my next visit.
