What made my stay at Ikoinomura so enjoyable was the staff. Manager Yamamoto-san was warm and easy to talk to, and knew a lot about astronomy and how the sea of clouds forms. Tours to see it were available, and he spoke English well. The restaurant staff I met were friendly, professional, and always smiling, even though they seemed to be helping with the accommodation too. The food was delicious, especially my first dinner. They even thoughtfully prepared a vegetarian kaiseki with gentle but lovely flavors. The hotel is close to a spot known for the beautiful sea of clouds, and you might be able to see it from the hotel as well. On a clear night, the stars are lovely. There’s a free shuttle from nearby train stations, though it’s worth telling the hotel if you have large luggage, since they may send a smaller shuttle when there aren’t many passengers. The building is a little old, which I thought added to its charm, but my room was very clean and the facilities were well maintained. I was surprised there wasn’t a shower in the room and that guests had to use the onsen. Maybe I misunderstood the instructions, but the onsen itself was clean and enjoyable. One small suggestion: more information in English on the website, and an easier way for foreign guests to email the hotel. My emails went unanswered, so I ended up calling. I really enjoyed my stay and hope more people discover this place.

The town often comes into view with clouds gathered in the basin, and the outlook from the photo spot is great. That spot is only about five minutes away, and works well for sunrise, sunset, and astrophotography. The hotel itself is beautiful.
