I think we’ve found our favorite place. We visit Miyako-jima twice a year and have tried all sorts of stays, from holiday houses to higher-end hotels like The Rescape, Tokyu, and Seawood. We stayed in Umi, a bright, airy room with windows on three sides. You can see farms and plantations, with the ocean in the distance. The natural oak floors were soothing on tired feet, and the furniture and materials felt high quality. Santa Maria Novella potpourri was waiting for us, which was a lovely surprise since it’s our favorite fragrance from Firenze. The bed was comfortable, and there was a small kitchenette. The bathroom was tastefully put together, with some of the fluffiest towels I’ve used. I also liked looking at the linen curtain with Pablo Picasso’s scribble and signature while taking a bath. For three nights we had both Japanese and Western breakfasts. Everything was made with high-quality local ingredients, simply prepared so their freshness came through. The owner seemed to take care with every detail, right down to the oil and salt. The owners of Azzura made the stay, too. They were friendly, professional, and attentive, and their dog and cats were just as friendly and cute. The room was clean, stylish, and cozy, with personable service and what I’d call the best breakfast on Miyako-jima, all at good value. We’d worried the place might be too far out, but being up on the hill brought a nice breeze into the rooms and gave us a wide view of the island. It was also about a 10-minute drive to beaches, shopping, and restaurants, so the central island location worked out as a plus.

I found the neighborhood peaceful and quiet, though the beach, town, and other visitor spots were still fairly close. The room had the things I needed, with good linens and a nice selection of toiletries. The mattress was comfortable, and I enjoyed having a choice of Japanese or Western breakfast. A great place to stay when you’re visiting Miyakojima.

Villa Azzurra on Miyokojima was the best bed and breakfast I’ve stayed at. The whole experience was wonderful, and I’d definitely return and recommend it to anyone. Getting around the island was easy from its location. The breakfasts were healthy, balanced, delicious, and lovely to look at. Each one felt special and different. The rooms were in excellent shape, clean, well stocked, and comfortable, with quality pillows and blankets, very comfortable beds, huge soft towels, and even a completely relaxing smell. They helped with things we unexpectedly needed, like talcum powder and aloe gel. They also adjusted breakfast a little to suit a Western diner and got us a rental car quickly. The hosts were gracious about letting us visit their lovely dog and cat, Umi and Taiyo, regularly, at least twice a day. They went well beyond what I expected. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

We chose the room facing the sugarcane fields when my husband and I visited in early summer last year. There were two rooms available, and we were very happy with the lovely room and delicious food. My favorite part was the spacious bathroom, with its international-style design. The owners were very kind, too. We borrowed a full set of snorkeling gear and got to pet their dog and cat, who live in the main house. If you’re trying to decide where to stay, I’d recommend it. I hope to come back!

We’d picked AZZURRA for our first trip to Miyako Island, and it felt like stepping somewhere special. Sugarcane fields surround the inn, whose white and blue exterior was so refreshing. Our elementary school-aged son loved how roomy the room was. The furniture and beds seemed carefully chosen, and the owner’s taste showed in little things like the showerhead and fluffy towels. We wanted to spend time at the beach, and the owner suggested several places where we might find sea turtles. They lent us marine shoes, which really helped. Breakfast was excellent, with Western and Japanese dishes on alternating days. The rice cooked in an earthenware pot was especially good, and we were glad to have local vegetables and fruit. We’d love to stay again when we return to Miyako Island, and would recommend it to our friends. Thanks for a lovely time.
