The room I had came with a great view, and the staff were really helpful. I enjoyed staying here and would come back. In the evening, walking through the connected corridors was an experience in itself, with passages leading off toward different rooms and a big dining area. The place has a bit of that Shining hotel feel.

My family had a good time here, even with a few things that might put some people off. The thermal water has a sulfur smell that mixes with a musty, moldy smell. Hotel Taikan also has the long corridors and ballroom, with elevator music, that bring The Shining to mind. If you want a glimpse of a 1970s Japanese time capsule, this is the place.

There are two indoor baths and two outdoor rotenburo, plus water streams for back massage, called Tataki. The water was clear, and there were only a few guys there in the morning. The baths are really big, with great views over the lake and gardens.

The lake view is fantastic, and the onsen was so good I’d come back just for that. The rooms are spacious, though a bit dated, which seemed fine for what I paid. Buffet dinner and breakfast were only mediocre, but again, acceptable for the price.
