We only visited the resort for its summer illumination, not to stay at the hotel. The grounds seem poorly maintained, and both the display and its attractions felt like a step down from previous years. The 1,000 yen entrance fee didn’t feel justified by the show. There is a playground by the parking area, though, and plenty of parking spaces.

The rooms were spacious by Japanese hotel standards, the food was excellent, and the service from most of the staff was great. The illumination show was especially nice. Our main frustration was the front desk, where the service felt out of step with the rest of the resort. Calling to book took a long time before anyone answered. On arrival, employees seemed busy with other tasks and weren’t paying much attention to people needing information or checking in. At check-in, one woman at the computer told us to wait for someone else to come help. I’ve traveled around Japan since 2009 and never had this kind of check-in experience. If that’s normal at APA, the front desk team could use serious customer service training, perhaps with the restaurant staff.

The rooms and restaurant look out toward the local mountains, which makes for lovely views. It’s a nice hotel right beside the golf course, with plenty to keep a family occupied: putter golf, disc golf, a play area, bike rentals, and golf carts you can rent to drive around the grounds.

Mt. Myoko is in view from every room, and the rooms themselves are comfortable. The staff were outstanding. Both the dinner and breakfast buffets stood out, with an unusual selection of healthy food.

The outdoor public bath was a real treat, with a lovely mountain view and a relaxing feel. Our room was clean and roomy, and the service was great. A wonderful hotel.
