The room was spotless, nicely prepared, relaxing, and even smelled lovely, which isn't always the case in traditional accommodation. We especially appreciated the efficient communication and the follow-up about the headphones we forgot, which let us pick them up. The Zen meditation with the monk was enjoyable and gave us ideas to take home. One thing to know is that the rooms are inside the temple and near shared spaces, so daytime can be a little noisy, though the nights are peaceful and quiet. The 6AM mantra chanting echoing through the temple was one of the most memorable parts. Temple Hotel Daitaiji was a real highlight of our trip, and the stay felt unique and meaningful.

I would've liked a more personal welcome than simply being shown the room and bathroom. When I asked to see inside the temple, they promptly said yes. I also asked in Japanese about the temple's history, but was told to scan a QR code and read it online. I couldn't find the code. The cleaning staff who came the next day were the only people who were friendly and welcoming. Apart from what other reviewers have said, the bathroom was quite nice.

The temple itself is still active, with one resident monk who offers writing classes and chanting. We tried the writing class and really enjoyed it. The temple website explains what to expect very well. It's a charming, good-value place to stay in a forest in the Nachikatsuura-cho area of Wakayama, and has the added appeal of being a few hundred years old. It makes a great base for the Nachi falls trails and Seiganto-ji temple area, about 15 minutes away by car. We were warmly welcomed, and the rooms and futon beds were comfortable, with heaters and air conditioning. Communal kitchens have cutlery. If you're over six feet tall, be ready to bump your head a few times. We had a wonderful time!

We felt very welcome at the temple, and the lodging and amenities were good. We tried four temple activities: the statue tour, morning prayer, zazen meditation, and monk porridge. We also got to ring the dong at sunset, which felt really special. The chief monk gave us great insight into Buddhist practices, and we came away with ideas we can use in our own meditation.

After two months in Japan and around 20 different stays with my partner, this was easily one of our favorites. The natural setting felt beautiful and traditionally Japanese, and the temple and gardens were lovely. The rooms were comfortable, and it's a great place for anyone wanting to connect with Japanese culture and traditions. We reached Nachi Waterfall and the surrounding area without trouble, coming from Osaka by train and getting around by public transport. Tomy was wonderful. We meditated with him, and he explained and showed us a lot about life in Zen Buddhist temples. He even lent us bikes so we could get to the village faster. We'd return without hesitation.
