The outdoor baths had lovely views of the surrounding mountains and forest, and the place was very clean. I visited the onsen for the day and paid 1,100 yen, plus about 200 yen for a towel. I was surprised by how small it was: just three pools, one indoors and two outside, with no obvious cold pool or sauna. If you’re not staying overnight or already in the area, it may not be worth the drive.

The shuttle from Nagaoka Station is convenient. I visited in June, when the weather was pleasantly cool. The lounge has large windows and offers all-you-can-drink soft drinks from 7:30 to 20:30. All the food was excellent, as were the rooms and hot springs. Dinner came in small portions, so I could try lots of delicious dishes and felt very satisfied. The public bath was clean, and the view of the green mountains from the open-air bath was so beautiful that I stayed soaking for a long time.
