We enjoyed the unusual, tasteful mix of traditional Japanese ryokan style and Bauhaus furniture, which reminded me of a kissaten. Bill Evans was playing in the lobby while we had welcome snacks, and the dining room was beautifully furnished. We chose a Japanese-style room with a kotatsu, which was especially welcome on a 2-3 degree day in Yufuin. Breakfast was the only meal we had, and it was beautifully presented and tasted great, though every dish was cold. I’d have liked some hot options too. A couple of things caught us by surprise: guests are expected to lay out their own futons, and the mattresses are heavy enough that older guests might struggle to lift them. Checkout at 10 AM is earlier than at most places. There’s no private onsen to reserve, but the open-air rooftop bath has a great view. The ryokan is only a 13-minute walk from JR Yufuin Station, though it’s uphill if you’re hauling your luggage. It was a cool stay, and I’d recommend it to people looking for a distinctive, carefully designed ryokan rather than a typical traditional one.

We got impeccable service during our two nights in March 2025. I ate well, rested well, and slept well. The Japanese-style room had a mountain view, and I had a relaxing soak in the onsen. There are three public bath areas, and the rooftop one was my favorite. I even got up at 6:30 AM for the sunrise over Mount Yufu. The lounge is so pleasing to look at that it really helped me unwind. We chose half board, and the food was excellent in both presentation and taste. The hosts took such good care of us. Japanese hospitality at its best. I’d totally recommend Ryokan Hachisunoito and hope I can come back. ^^

We had a peaceful morning thanks to the quiet setting, and the hotel is in a good location. The room and facilities felt clean and new. You can ask to have the private-room onsen temperature adjusted. The food was tasty and there was plenty of it, though more hot dishes would be welcome in winter. The service was very good, and I'd stay again.
