The hot springs were wonderful, the view was great, and the room had a nice atmosphere that made the trip feel complete. Staff were also very friendly and polite. Still, I expected more after reading all the positive reviews, and ended up disappointed. I gave it two stars because I don't think I'll return. The bugs were a real problem for me. There were twice as many as I expected, and some were there before I even entered the room. Once inside, I found them flying around too. I really hate bugs, so I couldn't get comfortable. The room had a smell that bothered me as well, a bit like mountain grass. Maybe I'm overly sensitive to it, but I'd expected a relaxing space. I don't know whether the refrigerator was broken, but even on its highest setting it didn't cool anything. The alcohol I'd just bought turned lukewarm, so be careful in summer. I visited during summer, and things might be different in another season.

The room had plenty of space, and I loved the indoor bath. Just plan ahead for meals: there aren't any convenience stores close by, though there's a frozen food machine in the lobby and a tasty private yakiniku place about 5-7 minutes away. There's a microwave in the room, too. Getting here really requires a taxi or rental car. The lobby isn't staffed from 8 PM until 10 AM, but they called a taxi for me when I checked out.

We were surprised by how roomy the place was, especially since Japanese accommodations can be on the small side. The water at the room sink is drinking water straight from the source, and there are vending machines, including one for beer, at reasonable prices. There's no kaiseki, which helped keep the rate reasonable even with a private bath. The bath was wonderful, and after staying here I felt like my skin was better. Maybe it's just me, but I want to come back. You'll need a taxi or rental car. The road isn't really walkable and has no sidewalk, and there's not much nearby. Pick up groceries in central Yufuin before you check in. A one-way taxi ride is about 1,200 yen. Ask the lobby to call about 10 minutes before checkout. They said a taxi could take 30 minutes because checkout times overlap with other ryokans, so the owner offered us a ride instead. Thanks 🫶 Being out of the way was a drawback, but it was peaceful, and soaking in the open-air bath while looking at the moon was lovely.

My boyfriend lost his phone just after we reached the hotel, and the staff member took the problem to heart and helped us locate it quickly. Thank you so much. The room was spacious, with a private bath for a quiet stay. They don't serve kaiseki, so it's a good idea to shop for food at the nearby Aeon Mall. The staff were kind and can call a taxi at checkout. We realized the checkout time late and had to call one ourselves, but there are blog posts explaining how to do it, so don't worry.
