Hotel Monterey Nagasaki

A festival was happening right outside while we were there, which added some fun to the visit. The rooms are a decent size and the facilities are fine. The place has a Dutch and Portuguese feel to it.

After a full day walking around the sights, four of us settled at a table in the courtyard, which looked like a lovely place to rest. A few minutes later, the manager came out and rudely told us to leave. He said we could use a small deck upstairs if we smoked, which made no sense. We’re on a group tour and staying here for two nights. For someone Japanese, where politeness is valued, his aggressive and unfriendly behavior was a real disappointment.

The rooms and hotel have a quaint feel, but the manager was rude. We were on a tour and hoped to enjoy a refreshing beer outside in the beautiful courtyard after a long, hot day of walking. We had bought it elsewhere since the hotel didn't offer it, but the courtyard wasn't in use and we were rudely waved away.

The Portuguese theme and the hotel's appearance near Chinatown were appealing, but the inside was a letdown. Our room was tiny, with barely any space to move, and the closet was minuscule. The pillows felt like they were full of gravel, though I did get them changed. Staff offered no help with our luggage. The large 50-inch Sony Bravia TV was controlled by the hotel, so my USB wouldn't work, and they wanted payment for movies. We were cycling and wanted to keep our expensive bikes secure, so we were told to use the underground car park. Then they charged ¥3600 for two bikes for two nights, about what a car would cost. It felt like a shameless money grab.
