I've traveled around Japan for 25 years, but this was worse than places I've stayed in Southeast Asia. There were moldy carpets, an old air conditioner smell, cockroaches, and other bugs. There was nothing around the hotel, and the neighborhood itself looked abandoned. Do not stay in this area. This was the first hotel in Japan I've encountered that was managed like this.

The room was huge and even had a balcony, and the view is the main reason I’d stay here again. It’s a little outside central Nagasaki, about ¥1200 by taxi from the station, and there isn’t much service beyond the basics. Still, rates are low, so I thought it was good value.

It’s an old-fashioned place with great staff and service. Getting there can be tricky even though it’s close to Nagasaki Station, since it sits at the top of a hill. I wouldn’t walk up with luggage, take a bus or taxi.

We had unlimited food and drinks on the rooftop, then enjoyed the onsen and slept on tatami. A great way to end the day.
