A shuttle runs straight from Nagoya Airport to the hotel entrance, which made getting there easy. Staff were attentive and friendly, spoke Korean and English, and greeted us with helpful guidance. We arrived before check-in, but the bellboy stored our bags and later put them in our room at the scheduled check-in time. Check-in takes place on the sixth floor, where there's a small self-service bar with coffee and other drinks. The soda machine was great, especially the Calpis. The building has the classic feel of an older Japanese hotel, but the rooms are surprisingly spacious by local standards. Our bathroom was large and comfortable, and the TV had YouTube and Netflix. In my case, the fridge drinks, including about six kinds of alcohol, were complimentary. It's a bit away from the busy downtown area, but I was very satisfied and would gladly stay here again on another trip to Nagoya.

Sakae's Don Quijote stores, Mitsukoshi Mall, Loft, and other spots are all within walking distance. There's also a drugstore, restaurants, tax-free shops, 7-Eleven, Family Mart, and Starbucks nearby. The hotel was clean and well maintained, and the staff were friendly. Breakfast was nice, served from 7am-10am. They provide pajamas, a toothbrush, a hair dryer, and other items.

I wasn't looking for service that only seems polite on the surface. My stay at Nagoya Kanko Hotel was marked by some of the most disappointing and exclusionary treatment I've experienced in Japan. It felt as if guests were judged by perceived status instead of receiving the same basic professional courtesy. On the reception floor, Level 6, I went to ask for help while several female staff members were present and appeared to have nothing to do. They looked at me and ignored me. There was no greeting, acknowledgment, or offer of help. Being overlooked in a reception area that fills an entire floor, with many counters, is indefensible for a hotel that claims “excellence” in service and hospitality. This didn't feel like a one-off. During my stay, I saw warmth and attention given selectively to guests staff seemed to consider more “worthy,” while others got indifference and dismissal. To me, this went beyond poor training and reflected a service culture based on judgment. I've stayed at much more prominent hotels around the world, including Hilton, Accor, and Marriott properties, and never encountered this sort of selective or discriminatory treatment. Even when those hotels were packed with travelers, staff still treated people respectfully and consistently. That's the basic standard of real hospitality. The housekeeping team were the only staff who seemed truly sincere. One of the Ojīchan at the lobby also kindly helped us with our luggage without being asked. He was incredibly genuine, unlike the rest of the staff. We weren't given fresh towels daily and had to specifically request them. Even then, when my husband asked for towels and other things, they expected him to carry it all himself. I don't understand how that matches the hotel's claims of “excellent service.” Also, if you're driving, the parking area has very narrow turns that may be too tight for some cars. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. There are better options, such as the Hilton just beside it.

The hotel is beautiful, and its location is ideal for seeing Nagoya, but I couldn't sleep because the room was so hot. The thermostat was set to 15°C, yet the room was 26°C. At the front desk, I was told the central system only runs heat in winter and can't be switched to cooling. The windows are fixed, so there was no way to let in fresh air. For a high-end hotel, 26°C with no ventilation is unacceptable. It's a shame, but if a good night's sleep matters to you, avoid staying here during winter.

The room was spacious, close to a few places on my itinerary, and having a parking garage was great. Check-in was a little irritating and confusing. I was told to wait on some couches, and since I don't speak much Japanese, I wasn't sure how long it would take. Thankfully it wasn't long, and everything went smoothly. I'd come back.
