Kappou Ryokan Amimoto Umeya

The food alone makes this a ryokan I’d like to visit again. There was a good range of fish dishes, including sashimi, and everything tasted great. They cut each kind of fish in a way that seemed suited to it, which I thought showed real care. I’d never eaten cuisine like this at a ryokan before. We came as a group of about 20 on a motorcycle tour and reached the inn late in the rain. They waited for us and still served us a warm meal. The location is great, the staff are kind, and I’d recommend staying here.

We came for a family member’s 77th birthday, and the landlady made us feel very welcome with her kindness and hospitality. My family, who live in the prefecture, were especially pleased with all the fresh seafood at dinner and breakfast. Everything was tasty, with the grilled fish and fried dishes standing out in particular. The bath was clean and comfortable, too. We’d definitely like to return.

The landladies make the place feel relaxed and homey, almost like you’re visiting a relative. It’s a nice way to enjoy fresh seafood without worrying, and it costs considerably less than nearby Wakura Onsen. The fish is so fresh that, for a while afterward, fish from the city seems smelly by comparison. You could stay here for the food, then enjoy the hot springs in Wakura on your way back.

The rooms are traditional tatami spaces, and the landlady and staff are warm and kind. If you’re up early, you can also watch the set-net fishing. The rice is delicious 😋, and the seafood is freshly caught and so good that even people who usually don’t like fish can enjoy it.
