Quaint House Naoshima

The building looked quite modern from outside, but inside the structure was like an old island house. My reserved room was large, clean, and cozy, and it had a sauna room. The location was terrific, near the pier and with quite a few restaurants nearby, so staying here was very convenient.

We paid 27,000 yen a night, but even basic things like chopsticks and a dish towel for washing dishes were missing, and the place wasn’t very comfortable despite being advertised with amenities and comfort. When we went to pick up our bikes, nobody was there, even though the bike shop is part of the same business. The pillows were very soft and flat; when we asked for one extra pillow each, we were told it would cost another 300 yen per pillow, which seemed inappropriate at that price. All the island’s museums were closed. That was our mistake, and I’d advise others to check the calendar rather than just the stated closure information. Still, the hotel should have told us that its restaurant would be closed the whole time too. When we asked staff where we could eat, they suggested going off-island. Most other accommodation was closed during that period as well, since everything else was closed.

We were there on a weekday, so the complex wasn’t too crowded. Our room, D, was very clean and the facilities looked new. It wasn’t especially spacious, but was just enough for one night. There’s a communal living area at street level, and the location is handy, with restaurants and bars nearby.

The location was excellent and the room itself felt quite cozy, but a strong mouldy smell made it uncomfortable to spend time there. It left us concerned about the safety and general condition of staying at this hotel.
