The staff were so thoughtful. When we came back cold from being outside, they were already waiting with hot towels and a warm drink. That’s just one example of how kind they were from check-in through checkout, and I haven’t had that kind of care at another hotel. The room with the private sauna and bath was stunning. You can hear traffic from the road quite clearly if you’re outside or have the bath door open, but the room more than made up for it. It’s a short walk to the temples, and we could get to the water and fire festival easily, about 15 minutes on foot. The food looked and tasted impressive, even though kaiseki isn’t really to my taste. They were incredibly accommodating with our picky vegetarian and pescatarian requirements. We also got a souvenir photo with the cuddly deer and a very cute deer postcard. I’d absolutely stay here again if I return to Nara.

I had a room-only booking, so I can’t comment on the food. Everything else was clean and the facilities were good, with friendly, knowledgeable staff. I liked having a separate toilet and shower, plus our own private onsen. Deer touches ran throughout the building, and the design mixed traditional and contemporary styles really nicely. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend it.

The traditional onsen and cozy rooftop terrace with its lovely view were highlights, and breakfast was delicious, with authentic local Japanese dishes. Hotel New Wakasa is only a two-minute walk from Nara Park and its famous deer. Inside, the decor and installations catch your eye right away. The room was beautiful, with refined minimalism and soft details that made it feel calm and comfortable. The staff treated us like old friends, taking time to explain both the hotel and the city. They were attentive, friendly, and glad to offer advice and recommendations. A memorable part of my Nara trip, and a great balance of comfort, atmosphere, and Japanese hospitality.

The kaiseki dinner was the best part for me. The chef made really delicious food, and having someone play violin while we ate was a treat. The staff were wonderful from the moment we arrived, and the service and accommodation were much better than I expected. It’s within walking distance of Todaiji, Nara deer park, and the shopping streets. I didn’t like the futon mattress, though. I’m used to a regular bed, and my back hurt when I woke up. There’s a private outdoor bath in the room if you’re not comfortable using the public one. Apart from the mattress, I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to try a ryokan.

We booked two rooms for my family, both with private baths. They were spacious, comfortable, and nicely decorated. I especially liked the one with wood-paneled walls, which felt calming. There were plenty of toiletries and drinks, and each day we found delicious local traditional snacks on the table. Yukata were provided as sleepwear, and the rooms gave us a full Japanese traditional experience. The staff explained everything and were all friendly and helpful. The older gentleman who welcomed us when we arrived was especially kind, and we felt very welcome. I called ahead to let them know we weren’t comfortable with raw fish, and they were attentive about leaving it out of our meals. The Japanese-style breakfast was flavorful and delicious, and there was also a Western-style option. The hotel interior was lovely, with deer decorations around and stained glass by the entrance. Worth the money, and I’d definitely come back to Nara.
