The hotel offers pick-up and drop-off at the Shinkansen station for check-in and checkout, which made it easy to plan around our train bookings. The staff were great and did their best to speak with us in English. Don’t let the language barrier put you off. A translation app worked fine, even for booking. The onsen is what makes this place special. There are several mixed-gender outdoor baths, but getting to them means going down 320 steps, which could be hard for some people. The view from them was amazing. We visited in late March, during a quiet period, and had the whole place to ourselves. There’s another gender-separated outdoor bath only 20 steps down. It’s partly enclosed, so we had no trouble using it in heavy rain, and it was beautiful. The hotel also has separate bathing areas indoors, another great experience. We loved our stay. We had a basic, spacious tatami room, although its bathroom was small but functional. Wearing the robe around the place and having dinner in our room were experiences in themselves. The food was nice, though there were some dishes I wouldn’t have ordered myself, but that’s part of the fun. A Japanese breakfast was served in the dining room. It was different, but that was part of why we came. I’d totally recommend this ryokan, especially outside peak season, when the stay feels more personal.
