The dinner was a huge, happy surprise. I’m a strict vegan and was a little worried, but they remembered when I asked in the morning, replying straight away, "vegan, right?" I still expected a simple meal, but they put together a custom seven-course dinner that rivaled anything else I’d eaten in Japan, even after more than a month there. The staff were wonderfully attentive, around when needed and giving me space otherwise. The proper Japanese inn touches were great too: leaving shoes at the front desk, wearing the yakata, and choosing between the big onsen or the smaller one with its private outdoor patio. The rooms are really spacious, a nice change after city stays around Japan. Its location worked well for me, outside the town centre but a short bus ride away. Nights are dark and mostly quiet, though early morning cars can be loud, and the building has the pleasant creaks, grumbles, and hums of a well-established place. The western-style room beds were pretty firm, even for someone like me who prefers a firm bed. As an occasional side sleeper, I woke up a bit stiff, but walking or a soak in the onsen helped. I really enjoyed the stay and it’s probably my favourite in Japan.

The peaceful setting and the owners' hospitality made us feel completely at home. We loved the Japanese-style room and especially the private onsen. Breakfast was excellent and suited our diet perfectly. On the day we left, their son even offered us a lift to the station. Such a lovely stay, thank you both!
The staff were the best I've come across, and the rooms had lovely thatched flooring, along with beds and a TV. I only stayed one night, but fell for the place. Just beautiful. Peter
We wished we'd added dinner and breakfast so we could try the food and spend longer in the shared spaces. The onsen is shared, with private-use time, and the rooms are really cute. It's also easy to get around from the nearby bus stop. A lovely stay in Nikko, and a shout-out to the owner's girlfriend, who drove us to the train station after checkout. Those genuine moments are what we look for when we travel.
The owner is such a sweet lady. She made sure we had water and snacks to take along on our outings each day. We also loved the food, some of the best I've had, and there are two private hot tubs. If you book, go for the breakfast and dinner package.
