I spent three weeks at the Niseko Backcountry Lodge during my January trip to Japan, and I’d happily come back. It has a relaxed, welcoming feel, and there are plenty of food, drink, and onsen options within a short walk. It’s also a little removed from the busy ski villages. For getting to the slopes, the staff run a morning bus to Annupuri and a return shuttle at 4:45. Night skiing still leaves about a 15-minute walk back, and at the right time of season you can ski back to the lodge. The staff were friendly, helpful, and easy to communicate with. Since I was travelling solo, it was nice to have people around to chat with and ask about the area. The place was one of the cleanest hostels I’ve stayed in. Beds are cozy, dorms give you a decent amount of privacy, and the showers are well kept. Guests were mostly around 18-35, but older people seemed welcome and had a good time too. I thought the price was reasonable for Niseko, though higher than hostels I’ve stayed at in Canada. Compared with other lodging I looked at locally, it had the best balance of price and quality, and was a reasonable distance from the resorts. I had a great stay here. The one thing I’d suggest is adding cameras in the ski storage area. Another guest took my boots from the boot drying room, and there was no way to find out what happened. I don’t blame the staff or lodge for someone else stealing, and I know that’s a risk with hostels generally, but cameras might help.

We had a room to ourselves when I came in December with five others, though most of the guests seemed to be travelling solo. The beds were extremely comfortable and the whole lodge felt cozy. We had a car, so I can’t say how good the bus is, but the location worked really well for skiing Niseko. Food and drinks aren’t very close, so you’ll want a car if you’re counting on many options. I’d stay again in a heartbeat.

Food nearby is limited, so having a car helps, or you can eat a big meal before heading back. I was travelling alone and would stay here again in similar circumstances. They provide a shuttle to and from Annupuri, a basic breakfast each morning, and the staff are friendly. The ski and board storage is nice, with a boot room too, and the bathrooms and showers were decent. My bed was surprisingly comfortable and long enough for me at 6'2". Some beds sit awkwardly close to the ceiling, and mine had a window that woke me early every morning.

The lodge is in a great spot for skiing, though it feels isolated and there aren’t many good places to eat nearby. Staff were awesome and very helpful. Rooms were fine, about average for a hostel. I really enjoyed staying in this quaint old ski lodge turned hostel, and it’s a good cheap option if skiing is the main reason you’re here.

We skied on Mt Moiwa, and the location worked perfectly. The staff made us feel welcome, and the facilities had what we needed, from ski lockers to kitchen utensils. Having a car helped a lot, and I’d recommend one if you want to explore the area and have more food choices. We loved our stay.
