The Lodge Moiwa 834

We came at the last minute over New Year many years ago, when everything else was booked out, and found this brand-new capsule hotel at Moiwa. Full board was included, with Japanese and Western options at breakfast. Dinner was the real deal: three-course French meals each night using local produce, thanks to a French chef they employed that year. One night’s meal had an awesome cold soup, duck for the main and dessert. I hadn’t known French food could be so good. The rest of the accommodation was fantastic too. My only wish was that they had an onsen or public bath.

You’ll be fine here if you can sleep deeply through pretty much anything. If you’re a light sleeper, spending extra for a hotel may suit you better.

The rooms were comfortable and just what I expected, and the staff were kind. There’s also a locker room for ski gear. Since Moiwa Resort is right across the road, getting onto the slopes is easy. The hotel’s connection with the ski resort also gets you 50% off lift tickets and rentals, which can save you money overall. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

The location is fantastic, and the staff do a good job. Breakfast is included and decent, while the restaurant has a nice atmosphere but a limited selection. The shared bathrooms and showers weren’t always kept clean by other guests. Since it’s a dorm, you’ll hear people heading to bed and getting up. If you’re comfortable staying in a pod, this place could be for you.
