The bed was too small and uncomfortably hard. Breakfast was bland with very few choices, and the coffee was terrible. I booked a queen and a double room but was given a double and a single instead. When I asked for a pillow for my 7-year-old, one staff member was about to bring one, then another abruptly said they were “out of stock.” That was an obvious lie, right to my face. Horrible stay. I won't come back, and strongly recommend that others don't either. It was extremely disappointing from start to finish.

I stayed here in March 2024 while visiting someone, and the location worked well for the shinkansen travel I had planned. The shinkansen station, bus loop, and taxis are right next to the hotel. At Y10650, the room was good value, and I'd consider staying again. For a 2-star hotel, I'd rate it 5/5. My room and the bathroom were very clean, and the room was in good condition, though the layout felt tight. The bed was firm, but I got used to it. The bathroom had a toilet/washlet and a deep soaker tub with a flex hose shower. The room included a Japanese-style breakfast buffet with salad, buns, rice, miso soup, and changing selections such as tamago (egg), mini wieners, boiled eggs, and stewed vegetables. The front desk staff speak little or no English, but they're friendly and helpful. The check-in kiosks make coming and going simple, and staff were there to help. I had no trouble. Neither Shirakawa nor Nishigo is really touristy, so you'll probably have a particular reason for staying in the area.

After a freezing ride to Shirikawa, the young women at reception welcomed me warmly and showed me where I could get free hot coffee to warm up. Later, when I returned from dinner, one of them read my Kanji and told me the name of the ramen restaurant I'd eaten at. This is one of the very best Toyoko Inns I've stayed in.
