The check-in point is at Michi no Eki in Obama, where we received a few useful perks: admission to one of eight temples near Obama, a coffee voucher for a designated cafe, and a bicycle voucher. If you enjoy traditional houses, ene coffee at Goshoen might be worth considering. Staying in a traditional Japanese house was a special experience. The building is old, but the inside was very clean. Most bedrooms are upstairs, and the stairs are quite steep. The only toilet is downstairs, which was a little inconvenient, though understandable in an old house conversion with a limited layout.

We went on the temple tour and used our Hama no Yu tickets, then wandered around Obama City from the townhouse. It made the trip really memorable, and I’d definitely like to stay here again. It was my first visit to Obama City and my first time staying in a machiya townhouse, with an old friend. The beautifully renovated house was clean and had a nostalgic feel, especially the wooden window frames and stairs. For dinner, we picked a tasty place within walking distance from the information center’s recommendations. In the morning, we used a cafe ticket for breakfast at a local coffee shop.

There was a kitchen with utensils, so we could have cooked the snow crab we caught on the trip. One downside of the older building was that there weren’t many electrical outlets. We spent the second day of our Fukui trip in Obama, which is the hometown of Agatsuma’s grandmother and has lots of memories for Agatsuma and her aunt from Nishinomiya. We stayed at Tango Kaido Taniguchi, another rental accommodation. It was quite nice, with facilities that felt more luxurious and easier to use than the place at Kumagawa-juku the day before.

We checked in after a day of fishing and had a very clean, relaxing one-night stay for five adults, with no meals included. The various coupons that came with the stay made everyone happy: we used them at a cafe the next morning, so it was practically breakfast. The Hamanoyu coupon was a good deal too. We’d definitely stay here again.

The house is close enough to walk to tourist spots, and its historic feel comes without much inconvenience. I also appreciated the thoughtful amenities and the good setup for cooking. We stayed during a chilly spell in early spring. This is an old Japanese house, and the cold really came through. Even with the air conditioner running full blast, it stayed cold and the air felt very dry. It hasn’t been updated for insulation or airtightness, as much of the original structure has been left in place. Be prepared if you visit in the cold season, though people used to traditionally built homes may not notice as much.
