Okayama Washington Hotel Plaza

The location is a real plus, near the main station, streetcars, buses, plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, and the big mall across the street. The staff were friendly and spoke English, which helped me, and I appreciated the hotel’s effort to be a bit more eco-friendly. The wifi was average. The worst part was waking at 6am to a strong cigarette smell in my non-smoking room. It seemed to be coming from very close by or through wherever the AC draws air. It lasted around 15 minutes and left me feeling disgusted and nauseous. I wouldn’t want to risk that happening again, so I wouldn’t stay here again. The building and rooms also feel dated and need a full refurbishment. The reception area looks like a fun fair mirror maze, and the hallway carpet and walls are worn and uninspiring. My room had scuffs and scratches on the furniture and elsewhere. I couldn’t adjust the AC temperature, only the airflow, and the room never felt cool. I was sweating when I woke up, even though I’d left the air on. The bathroom drain smelled bad, the vent barely cleared shower steam, and the old wooden sliding blinds let some light through.

At 5700 yen for a Sunday night, I can’t complain. The only thing was the pillow, I’m not used to a hard bean pillow.

We stayed three nights, and during the rest of our stay the hotel deliberately removed the machine. It was one of the very few amenities they offered, at the 2F entrance for tea, coffee, and water. Before that, one front desk staff member spoke to guests using it in a disrespectful, lecturing way and at a raised volume.

Getting around was easy, with all the trains right nearby and the castle and Japanese garden within walking distance. The hotel is also next to a pedestrian street full of restaurants and bars, so finding something after a long day was simple and enjoyable. My room was good overall, with a nice view, and the hotel was well equipped. I liked the welcome drink and breakfast, too.
