It's a peaceful area, and the simple rooms are adequate for the low price. The self check-in and check-out seem convenient, though they might be a little tricky for foreigners. The old house gets a bit cold in winter, but the air conditioner works well. It has the charms and flaws of an old-style room, and it's a nice base for a short visit to Okayama. :)

I had a huge tatami room, comfortable enough, though there was no TV. The house could be a lot cleaner. It's about a 10-minute walk from okayama station, and this is a budget option that I found much better than a capsule hotel. Just make sure to tell the owner at least an hour before you arrive, since he isn't there. You don't want to show up and find nobody around. :)

Yadokari guest house worked well for us as a couple. Our room was big, and although there's no kitchen, we had plates, cups, bowls, and other things for eating takeaway inside. It's about a 10-minute walk through the shopping arcade from the JR station, on the side of the city away from the castle and gardens. The place wasn't the cleanest I've stayed in, and the doors are noisy. There's air-conditioning. The guy who met us didn't speak English, but he was so nice we couldn't stop smiling.
