Forespa Kiso Atera Ryokan

A really good place to rest while walking the nakasendo trail. The price covers much more than just the room, and the onsen was a welcome part of the stay. Staff were so friendly and helpful that we felt at ease straight away. The free shuttle to the train station came in handy, too.

The breakfast was very traditional Japanese style, and we found it quite salty. The staff were kind and helpful, even though they didn’t speak much English. Rooms and onsen were nice, and the landscape was lovely. There aren’t many restaurants nearby, but there are a few. Free WiFi and parking. We’d come back :)

We loved the meals, but remember to order breakfast or dinner before you arrive. The staff were very nice, replied quickly to messages, and were always ready to help. There are free shuttles between the hotel and nojiri station; you just need to ask in advance.

The breakfast was great, and I wish we’d booked dinner too. The comforters were so plush I wanted to take one home. There’s a gender-separated onsen open around the clock, though it wasn’t available after 9am the next morning while it was being cleaned. The WiFi only worked in the downstairs lobby, which was a downside for us. The gentleman who checked us in was very hospitable and spoke English well. Be sure to look at the river running through Atera Valley. The color is incredible and really real.
