I wasn’t happy with the cancellation policy. Four days before the booking, I messaged to ask if I could move or cancel because trains had been canceled due to the typhoon. They said canceling would mean paying 70% of the booking. I asked if I could wait until closer to the date to see whether travel looked possible, but after that day the cancellation charge went up to 100%. In my experience in Japan, most hotels are accommodating when typhoons make travel impossible, offering another date or a full or partial refund. We’d paid a very high rate during Japanese silver week, over 25,000. All the other hotels on this trip let us cancel without a fee. The place looked cool, but given their stance, I wouldn’t choose this hotel.

The surrounding views are a little lacking, which is why I took off a star. Still, the owner has done a lovely job renovating this 100-year-old traditional Japanese house for modern comfort while keeping the exterior and interior’s traditional style. The former teahouse room has become a mini café with a counter, and the miniature garden you can see from the room is now a relaxing spot for coffee. Have a cup while looking at the moon, a real Moon's Cafe. Restaurants, izakayas, and downtown are all within walking distance, as is the Senkoji Ropeway entrance, just down the hill. German Grohe fixtures in all the bathrooms give them a sophisticated look.

It was a really comfortable stay, with modern facilities throughout. I also got to unwind in a traditional Japanese house that feels distinctive to Onomichi. Thank you!

The host speaks English and took time to share tips about Onomichi, from its ramen and old temples to the lovely coastal views. The house itself was clean, quiet, and felt reassuring. It’s near the Senko-ji Temple cable car, with Neko no Hosomichi close by too. A great base for following Kazuma Kiryu’s trail in Yakuza 6 through the ancient capital.
