Shuku Kaifu Minamichita Yamami Onsen

The room was awesome, with a view over the vast ocean, and the service was great. But I gave it two stars overall because the Onsen shower area was horribly dirty. I even saw a cockroach run out while I was showering. For an onsen hotel, cleanliness should be spotless, and that shouldn't happen.

There are several kinds of hot springs here. One signature spring needs to be booked in advance, but I thought the other springs that don't require reservations were just as wonderful. The hotel provides transportation to and from the nearby station, so I'd suggest checking in early. Different time slots let guests enjoy different culinary offerings in various rooms, which adds a nice sense of ceremony. Drinks from the room minibar are on the pricey side, and there aren't many convenience stores nearby. Bring extra snacks and drinks from the city before you check in. There were lots of pleasant surprises, and I'd happily stay again if I get the chance.

The rooms are great, the ocean view is breathtaking, and the service is excellent. There are little things that aren't always perfectly maintained, but people come here for the onsen, the sea views, and a chance to relax. I've never visited a better ocean-view Ryokan. It's in a remote location, which is both a plus and a drawback. There's a shuttle, but if you don't plan to eat at the restaurants, buy food before you come. The nearest convenience store is 20 minutes away. I'd strongly recommend trying the breakfast option. You can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner here. There are three private Onsen. One needs an appointment; the other two are first come, first served. The remaining two Onsen are gender-separated, and one switches to a shared onsen between both genders at certain times of the day. From 4-6pm, you can get free sake and beer in the relaxation room. Even after 6pm, you can pour the sake yourself. Ryokan like this are unfortunately dying out slowly, but this one is still going strong. If you get the chance, definitely stay here!

The food and onsen were amazing. This ryokan was excellent, and the service made us feel very welcome and special. The family onsen was a great experience, too.
