I’m so glad I kept my booking here. I’d first chosen this ryokan when I planned to cycle part of the Shimanami Kaido from Onomichi, but my route changed and I decided to stay on one of the islands. The reviews were so good that I timed the stay for the end of my ride instead. The hotel is exquisite and chic, with exceptional service and cuisine. I’ve had some very good meals elsewhere in Japan, but this was one of the best. As a solo traveler, I ended up having an extraordinary dinner conversation with another traveler from Chile. I think the openhearted atmosphere created by the restaurant and staff, along with the exceptional meal and wine pairing, helped bring that about. The garden was beautiful, and I learned a lot about Niwaki technique by looking closely at the trees. I docked a star for the room because I struggled with the air-conditioning, probably due to user error rather than a problem with the system, so perhaps four stars is unfair. The hotel is on the coast, within Onomichii’s working coastal area, where beauty and function coexist, as they do in much of Japan. Even so, it feels like a peaceful enclave. I’d gladly recommend it and return. It was a real treat and a highlight of my time in Japan.

We came during the holidays with my Japanese in-laws, and the whole family raved about how peaceful and wonderful the stay was. The grounds are carefully maintained, and the lounge is beautiful, with great touches like pour-over coffee and beer on tap. We stayed in the spacious Asahi and Sakura rooms, which connect to form one house, perfect for a large family. The Asahi room also gave us stunning morning sunrises. The restaurant’s French and Japanese flavors and techniques worked beautifully for our blended family. Staff were friendly and very accommodating. We couldn’t recommend this ryokan enough.

After biking the Shimanami Kaido trail, Ryokan Nishiyama in Onomichi was a lovely place to unwind. We stayed in a cottage with a spacious, well-appointed room, a fantastic bed, and a very large, comfortable bath. Dinner was spectacular, a multi-course tasting menu featuring wonderful local produce. Every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. We’d love to return.

The staff made this stay feel special, from check-in through dinner and the rest of our visit. We only spent a night here before riding the shimanami kaido, but the peaceful lounge, lovely grounds, onsen, and tasting menus all made me wish we had more time. It’s a beautiful place with wonderful hospitality. I hope I get to come back someday, and wish everyone there the best.

We’ve tried several lovely Ryokans over the past few years, and this one really stood out. The service put us at ease instead of making us feel intimidated, the food was incredible, and the accommodation was gorgeous. My girlfriend grew up in Kyoto, and we stayed here in fall 2025. I’d happily make a trip back to Onomichi just to visit again. Thank you!
