Matsu across the road has Western-style rooms, which are a little easier on the body, though it isn't as clean. I usually stay there, but it was full this time, and Country Joe turned out just as good, maybe better. I've been coming to Tsugiake for four years. The lodge is spotless, and the house matron takes real Japanese pride in keeping it that way. You can park right out front, and the bus stop is only a short walk away. We had excellent Japanese breakfasts each morning. We usually eat out, but next time I'd book at least one dinner at the lodge. We paid $600 for two nights for four people, and they only take cash. A few things to know as a foreigner: be very polite, expect to pay to rent towels, and the baths are shared men's and women's Japanese-style rooms. The rooms have futons and very little furniture. The house matron speaks little English, but she's happy to chat with Google Translate. You're here to ski, after all. Would I stay again? Yes.
