I stayed in March 2023. The grandmother who runs the place was kind and polite, and even drove me to the bus stop with my belongings when I left. The room was tidy and clean, and large by Japanese standards. The facilities are basic for an old hostel, with no smart features and limited showers, though the small indoor onsen was quite nice. It's not a bad location, about 5-10 minutes' walk to tugaike in winter, with restaurants and the main street nearby. For a reasonable price, you get the traditional Japan feel and a Japan-style room. If that's what you're after along with the basics, it's a nice option.

It felt like a fairly authentic ryokan, with a bit of rustic charm. Every day brought a different, delicious breakfast and dinner, including plenty of home-grown produce that had been pickled or preserved. A great base for skiing at Tsugaike and around the Hakuba valley.

After a tiring day skiing, you can glide downhill on your skis from the gondola station, which is 300m away. The hospitality was excellent, and the Japanese food was great home cooking.

For a trip up Hakuba-dake, this is a great place to stay. It's a few minutes from the cable car station, with souvenir shops nearby where you can pick up drinks. The owner was attentive and friendly, and her English was enough to communicate, though don't expect too much. The food was excellent, especially the dumplings, sashimi, and tomato soup. The portions were the one drawback: they were so large I wasn't sure I could finish everything.

The place has a lovely artistic feel thanks to the proprietress, who made the hand-woven tapestries and stained glass throughout. It's a comfortable Showa-era ski house, with homemade side dishes at breakfast and thoughtful service. The food was delicious. The proprietress runs it herself now and limits the number of guests. She's happy to talk about bringing dogs, and next time I'd love to visit with my own. The inn sits at the heart of the ski resort's development. The previous owner moved a demolished elementary school into the middle of a field, and the settlement began there.
