The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel itself is very nice. It’s a few blocks from Otaru Station, with the canal area a bit farther away. My room was clean but quite dated, with very few outlets. Breakfast cost us a star, maybe two. One restaurant has a Western buffet and the other serves a Japanese set meal, which made it hard for our group to eat together with different tastes and dietary needs. The breakfast restaurants also don’t open until 7 am, which squeezed our schedule for getting to the ski resorts around Otaru, apart from Tenguyama.

Our train to sapporo was suspended, so we stayed here on 25th january. We booked the Captain suites and were surprised by how huge the room was. The TV and bathtub were huge for us, and the toilet room was great too. Lounge access was free, with cookies and drinks available at no cost. We’d definitely stay again when we visit Otaru.

The captains bar was the one thing I enjoyed. It was nicely decorated, the philosophy drink was delicious, and the bartender was friendly. The Onsen is small, and the service felt nonexistent. My room was unbelievably tiny and made me feel claustrophobic, even by Japanese hotel standards. It wasn’t nice at all. I’d only stay here if I could get a suite. Otherwise it feels like a closet.

Since the new ownership took over in 2022, this place has become even shabbier. The largest rooms are the exception. There’s no customer service, and they no longer offer free customer parking, bell hops, or other ordinary assistance. The executive lounge is a joke, with just a few tables and very little to drink or snack on, and what’s there isn’t restocked routinely. It was minimal in 2022 and is worse now. I won’t stay again. There’s zero hospitality, just a dilapidated palazzo run by motel 6.

Staying on the lounge floor was quiet and private, and the station is just a 10-minute walk away. Best hotel in Otaru, highly recommended.
