This is a very clean place with a lovely Japanese atmosphere. Strictly speaking, it's a ‘Shukubo’ accommodation for Buddhist visitors to temples, rather than a hotel, though anyone can stay now. Its location is convenient for visiting temples on Hieizan, and guests at Enryakuji Kaikan get free admission to three areas of Hieizan. Dinner and breakfast are ‘Shojinryori’, prepared without meat or fish. There's a nice public bath with a lake view, and we enjoyed tiramis and tea in the ground-floor cafe terria. Guests can also join the morning worship at Konponchudo, starting at 6:30 am.

Just reviewing the restaurant: it's a wonderful hidden Buddhist restaurant on mount hieh, on the hotel's second floor. Everything is vegetarian. I had the udon, which was light and satisfying, with delicious pickled vegetables.

The traditional Buddhist meal was amazing, and the views were spectacular. If vegetarian food appeals to you and you're okay spending a bit more, I'd highly recommend eating here. During the off season you can go without a reservation, but there's only one meal option. I believe booking ahead gives you more choices.

The vegetarian meal was really good, and the view of lake biwa is amazing. Still, it's unlikely you'll get a window seat, since those are often reserved for local tour groups.

The food was a 10/10 experience, and the staff were wonderful and pleasant. The views were amazing too. The whole place was fantastic, with a wonderful public bath and super neat ryokan rooms. They also have western style rooms.
