Pension Lakeside

My mother had been coming here almost every year since childhood. She was such a longtime regular that when I called to book, they’d respond, “Oh!” We often rented the room on the right when facing the building. On one three-day, two-night stay, I remember playing by the lake with the owner’s granddaughter, who was about my age and lived next door. She was very caring, and I still think of her when summer comes around. We started keeping cats when I was in third grade, so after that I rarely got to visit. Then, in September 2024, I suddenly stopped by on my way back from Lake Biwa Valley. It felt deserted and lonely. I wonder how the owner is doing, whether the place is still open, and how the granddaughter is. Sumire, do you remember me? I’d love to visit again.

On September 28th, around 3 pm, I stopped by to use a ChargeSPOT mobile battery. The app payment was followed by an additional cash charge of 1,000 yen for non-guests, which I felt was unfair. I questioned it, but they only insisted it was a management decision. The experience was very unpleasant. I don’t think it’s honest to disregard the official rules and collect money independently. Please be aware that I wouldn’t feel confident using this facility.

The location is fantastic, with Lake Biwa in view and a sandy beach right in front that feels good just to walk along. Unlimited coffee is a small bonus. The foot massage feels great, though the chair height might not be quite right. One thing to know: bath towels and razors aren’t provided as part of the amenities. That seems to be their usual setup, not just a one-off.

The coffee shop that used to be attached is closed now, and the signs suggested it only opened in the busy summer season. The place seems to be run by an older couple, with a main house behind it. When there are no guests, the grandchildren apparently use it to study or play. It may work for a quick day trip, or for an overnight stay if all you need is a room and futon. I’d choose a regular business hotel next time, even if it’s farther away. It’s listed on a popular travel site, but I didn’t find it as impressive as the reviews made it sound. They seem to rely heavily on the Lake Biwa location. My booking showed the room and dinner at ¥5,000 each, ¥10,000 total. I didn’t order dinner, and got the impression they might not have wanted to prepare it. Maybe it would have been an extravagant meal if I had ordered. That’s just my guess.
