Hotel New Katsura

The auntie there helped me shell the crab really quickly. I'm glad she did.

The private onsen view was amazing, and we highly recommend it. We felt especially welcome in the dining room, too. Even though the staff were short-handed, this was one of the best experiences of our trip in Japan. The staff welcomed us warmly and took care to explain everything clearly despite the language barrier. While traveling elsewhere on the island, we had a car accident and thought we'd miss our private onsen booking. The locals let the hotel know, and they immediately moved the appointment later for us. We could only manage to get data-only SIM cards. The hotel also checked that we were okay after the accident. We felt bad about causing trouble for the community, and are very grateful for everyone's help.

The location isn't ideal, though you can rent bikes, and the dining looked good but seemed a little pricey, so I didn't try it. The rooms are large, although they aren't as comfortable as a 5-star place. I was very satisfied overall, with no personal complaints. Service was impeccable, and the free indoor and outdoor onsens are open daily until 11 pm.

I killed six mosquitoes in our room already, and now it's 2:00am and I can't sleep. Grrr. The hot room was stuffy, with no temperature control, and I wished I could open the window for some air. But there's no screen to keep the mosquitoes out. The wifi in our room was also very slow. At least the dinner and breakfast were good, and the staff were very kind. The hotel's a bit old but clean, with a nice outdoor onsen.
