The hot spring water at Hotel Symphony (Main Building) in Sagae Onsen is a smooth amber color, and it left my skin feeling very soft and refreshed. The hotel calls it "Bjin-no-yu" (Beauty Spring). The spacious, well-kept rooms come in both Japanese and Western styles, and the Kaiseki dinners feature seasonal Yamagata ingredients. It’s a relaxing place with warm hospitality, conveniently located near Sagae Station. After exploring the nearby cherry orchards or mountains, it makes a lovely retreat.

The restaurant has a tasty range of local and international dishes, and I especially enjoyed the satisfying breakfast. Staff were attentive and warm, and the rooms were clean, spacious, and well equipped. There’s a quiet lounge, free Wi-Fi, and a natural hot spring pool too. Symphony Hotel Yamagata is conveniently near Yamagata Station, making it handy for getting around or exploring the city. I’d recommend it for a business or leisure visit.

I came for a day visit, and the staff were nice. Both the indoor and outdoor baths use 100% natural hot spring water without circulation. The water is clear brown, with a little brown sediment, and has a woody smell. The outdoor bath is warmer and gets a large inflow of water. The indoor one is bigger, but has less inflow, so the water feels less fresh.

Sagae Station is right across the road, though the train to Yamagata Station takes about 30 minutes and only comes every 90 minutes or so. The room felt a little old, but the bed was comfortable.

The spa is good, but I was disappointed by the breakfast buffet. The hotel itself is just normal, nothing bad and nothing special.
